All classes have been taking part in the Food Dudes programme. We are learning about the importance of putting the right fuel in our bodies so that we will be able to enjoy being active! Mr. Gantley is organising the fruit & vegetables every day. We have tried mangetout, carrots, peppers, cucumber, apples, grapes, bananas & mandarins.
Instead of a meeting this week, the committee worked on art for the Active Schools notice board. We are hoping to add lots of information to the notice board over the next few months!
We had some great ideas from Jamie & Ms. Pyne for today's meeting. Jamie thought that it would be a good idea to have Active Homework one day each week. All the teachers will give Active Homework on Mondays from now on.
Ms. Pyne suggested that on Fridays, we could have "active" lining up after big break. Members of the Active Committee will lead the classes in exercises for a few minutes. We're sure that all pupils will be delighted to try it! 1. Survey: we went through the survey results and we chose a slogan. 2. Running Challenge ideas: we decided that every Friday, each class will run laps of the court for 10 minutes. We are hoping that every pupil will notice an improvement in their own fitness by the end of the year. 3. Tom & Eoghan helped Ms. Wylde to clear out the shed. There was a lot of broken equipment and it was very difficult to get in to the shed. Teachers will be reminded to put equipment back after PE classes and the Active Committee will check the shed daily after breaks. We had excellent suggestions for our Active School Slogan. The committee took a long time to decide on one and in the end "No matter what your shape or size, come on let's get some exercise" is the winner!!
The survey was completed by 76 children.
1. 100% said they liked PE 2. Favourite PE Strand: Games is the favourite Gymnastics Running Swimming Dance Nature Walks is the least favourite 3. How could PE be made better? Suggestions included: Active person award, more variety, better equipment, playground markings & more space 4. What do you do in the yard at break times? The majority of children said that they play soccer. 5. Did you enjoy last year's active school week? 99% of children said yes 6. What did you enjoy most about Active Schools Week? Extra PE was the favourite Hip Hop Dancing Cricket Yoga was the least favourite 7. How can we improve Active Schools Week this year? Suggestions included: Morning exercise, more visitors to the school, treasure hunts and nature walks, homework off, mini marathon, kids vs teachers matches, tournaments, Skip Hop, 8. Active School Slogan Items discussed at our meeting today included:
1. PE Resources: we made a list of all the equipment that we already have and then we prioritised what we need to buy for the school. A list was made and Ms. Wylde will discuss with Ms. O' Connell what we will be able to buy. We are lucky that the Parents' Association has been busy fundraising for the Active Schools this year. 2. PE Curriculum: Mary & Caoimhe went around to each class to remind teachers of the strands to be taught for the months of January & February. 3. Pupil Survey: we discussed what questions we should ask the pupils in a survey. Ms. Wylde & Ms. Pyne will create the survey and put it up on the school website. Each child will complete the survey for homework. 4. 10@10: we have decided to take part in the Operation Transformation 10@10 on Friday February 10th. Each class will do a mini PE lesson at 10am. We discussed what each class should do. Each member of the committee will tell their class & teacher about the 10@10. 5. Running Challenge: Ms. Wylde asked each member to think of a running challenge to be undertaken by the whole school. 6. Members of the committee would like to arrange a nutrition talk this year as part of the Active Schools Week. To select our Active School Committee, each child from 1st - 6th completed homework outlining why they should be chosen for the committee. It was a difficult task to choose representatives from each class and the following is a list of members:
1st Class - Sadhbh O' Donovan 2nd Class - Jamie Keehan 3rd Class - Aimee Colleran 4th Class - Roan Ketelaar 5th Class - Tom Tynan & Caoimhe Clancy 6th Class - Eoghan McMahon & Mary Hanrahan Some of the suggestions proposed by these pupils in their homework included: - setting up a Mini Olympics -time table yard areas to make sure boys/girls get equal time on courts -starting a walk & talk initiative -trying new sports -taking part in Operation Transformation -buying new PE equipment -visiting local parks & woods -suggestion box The children have great ideas and we are looking forward to continuing to promote being active in our school! |
